About this digital tool
The password strength checker assesses how strong a password is and shows what it lacks. Type the password into the field and instantly get a score from 0 to 5, a label from very weak to very strong and a list of the criteria met.
The score is calculated from length (points for 8 and for 12 or more characters), lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and symbols, and one point is deducted when characters are repeated three or more times. The analysis happens in your browser and the password isn't sent anywhere. The tool is indicative: it doesn't check whether the password has leaked or is common, so don't use the real password of an important account if you are not sure.
How to use
- Type or paste the password into the text field.
- Read the strength label and the score from 0 to 5.
- See which criteria are met: length, letters, numbers and symbols.
- Lengthen the password or add missing characters until the score rises.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a password strong?
Length (12+ characters), variety (letters, numbers, symbols) and uniqueness (don't use it anywhere else). Passphrases are even safer.
How does the tool assess password strength?
By length, the presence of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and symbols, with a deduction for repeated characters. The maximum score is 5.
Is the password I type stored or sent?
No. The assessment happens inside your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Still, for very important accounts it is safer to test a similar password, not the exact one.
Why is a long password better than a short one with symbols?
Every extra character multiplies the number of combinations an attacker must try. A long phrase is often safer and easier to remember than a short word with symbols.
