About this digital tool
The import customs and VAT calculator estimates how much you will pay for imported goods or cars: customs duties, excise where it applies and VAT. Enter the value of the goods (often including transport and insurance, that is the customs value), their type and, for cars, parameters such as year, engine size or fuel type, and the tool gives a breakdown of the charges and the total import cost.
The logic: customs duty is added to the customs value, then excise, and VAT is calculated on the value that includes these charges. Rates vary by tariff code, country of origin and the rules in force, so the result is an estimate. Before buying or clearing goods, check with customs or a clearing agency.
How to use
- Enter the customs value of the goods or vehicle.
- Set the customs tariff and excise (if applicable).
- See the customs duty, excise, import VAT and the total cost.
Frequently asked questions
How is VAT calculated on imports?
VAT applies to the customs value plus customs duty and excise. So: VAT = (value + duty + excise) × VAT rate.
What is included in the customs value?
Usually the price of the goods plus transport and insurance to the border. The exact rules are set by customs legislation.
Who pays customs duty and VAT on imports?
The importer, that is the person or business clearing the goods. Payment is made at clearance, usually through a customs agency or directly at customs.
What is excise and when does it apply?
It is a special tax on certain goods, such as fuel, tobacco, alcohol or vehicles. Whether it applies and how much depends on the goods and current law.
