Frequently asked questions
What is the healthy weight range?
For BMI 18.5–24.9: if you are 170 cm, your healthy weight is 53–72 kg. If you are 160 cm: 47–64 kg. If you are 180 cm: 60–81 kg.
Does it change with age?
Slightly. After age 65, studies suggest a BMI of 23–28 is associated with better longevity (slightly higher than the standard range). For children, growth curves are used, not absolute BMI.
What if I'm muscular?
BMI doesn't work well for very muscular people. Use body fat measurement (ideal: 10–20% men, 18–28% women) or waist-to-height ratio as an alternative.
How is healthy weight calculated by height?
The calculator uses BMI 18.5-24.9: minimum weight = 18.5 × height², maximum = 24.9 × height² (in metres). E.g. for 1.75 m the range is roughly 57-76 kg.
