About this digital tool

The exam grade calculator has two modes: it finds the grade you need in the final exam to reach a target average, or it calculates the final grade from several grades with different weights. Enter your current average, its weight as a percentage and the grade you are aiming for.

In the first mode the formula is (target grade − average × weight) ÷ exam weight, where the exam weight is 100% minus the weight of the current average. If the result exceeds 10, the tool shows you that the target can't be reached. In the second mode, the grades multiplied by their weights are added up and divided by the total weight. It is useful for students and pupils who want to know how much they need to study for the next exam.

How to use

  1. Enter the subject name and the grade received.
  2. Set the subject's weight or credits (optional).
  3. Add rows for each other subject.
  4. See the weighted average automatically.
  5. Set a target grade to see how much you need in the next exam.

Frequently asked questions

How is the weighted average calculated?

Each grade is multiplied by the subject's weight, then the sum is divided by the total sum of weights: Σ(grade×weight) ÷ Σ(weight).

What happens if I don't enter a weight?

When the weight is left blank, each subject gets a weight of 1 — so the simple arithmetic average comes out.

Can I use it for university grades?

Yes — enter the ECTS credits as the weight and the grades according to your system (4-, 5- or 10-point).

How do I find the grade I need in the final exam?

Choose the needed-grade mode, enter your current average, its weight and the grade you aim for. The tool calculates the minimum grade you must get in the final exam.

What does it mean when the tool says it can't be reached?

It means the needed grade comes out above 10, so even with a maximum grade in the exam you can't reach the desired average. Lower the target or check the weights you entered.
