About this digital tool

The running pace calculator works out one of three quantities: pace, time or distance, when you know the other two. Pace is expressed in minutes and seconds per kilometre; for example 5:30/km means 5 minutes and 30 seconds for every kilometre.

The formula is simple: pace = time ÷ distance, time = pace × distance and distance = time ÷ pace. You can use it to plan a 5 km, 10 km, half marathon or marathon, to see what pace you need to finish in a set time, or to compare workouts. If you are not used to running, increase the load gradually and consult a doctor if you have any concern about your heart.

How to use

  1. Choose what to calculate: pace, time or distance.
  2. Enter the two known values.
  3. See the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good running pace?

It depends on your level. Beginners: 6:30–8:00 min/km. Intermediate: 5:00–6:30 min/km. Advanced: under 5:00 min/km. Elite marathoners: ~3:00 min/km.

How is running pace calculated?

Divide the total time by the distance. For example, 10 km in 55 minutes is 55 ÷ 10 = 5.5 min/km, a pace of 5:30 per kilometre.

What pace do I need to run 10 km in an hour?

For 10 km in 60 minutes you need a pace of 6:00 per kilometre. Select the pace mode, enter a distance of 10 km and a time of 1 hour.

How should I pace a race?

Many runners aim for an even pace or slightly slower at the start. Starting too fast usually causes fatigue at the end. Use the calculator to find your target average pace.
