About this digital tool

The fuel consumption converter switches a car's consumption value between L/100 km, km/L, mpg (US) and mpg (UK). Enter the value in the unit you know, choose the unit and instantly see the equivalents in the other units.

L/100 km shows how many litres the car uses per 100 km, so a lower value means lower consumption. Km/L, US mpg and UK mpg show how far the car goes on one unit of fuel, so a higher value is more economical. These units are related by inverse formulas, and the US gallon is smaller than the British one, so US mpg and UK mpg are not the same. The tool helps when reading data on imported cars or in technical documents.

How to use

  1. Enter the car's consumption value.
  2. Choose the unit you have it in: L/100 km, km/L, mpg (US) or mpg (UK).
  3. Read the equivalents in the other units in the result rows.
  4. Compare cars by converting them all to the same unit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert mpg to L/100km?

L/100km = 235.215 ÷ mpg. E.g. 30 mpg = 235.215 ÷ 30 ≈ 7.84 L/100km.

What is good fuel consumption?

Under 6 L/100km is considered economical. 6–8 average. Above 10 L/100km is high consumption. Hybrid cars: 3–5 L/100km.

Why are US and UK mpg different?

Because the American and British gallons are not the same volume; the British gallon is larger. So the same car has a higher mpg in the British standard. Choose the right unit in the tool.

How do I convert L/100 km to km/L?

Divide 100 by the value in L/100 km. For example 5 L/100 km is 100 ÷ 5 = 20 km/L. The operation is the same in both directions.
