About this digital tool

The credit card calculator shows how many months and how much interest it takes to clear the card balance when you pay a fixed amount each month. Enter the balance, the annual interest rate and the monthly payment, and the tool simulates month by month: interest is calculated on the balance first, then the payment is deducted. This way you see when the balance reaches zero and what the borrowing costs.

Credit cards usually carry higher interest rates than ordinary loans. If you pay only the minimum, it can take many years and the interest can far exceed the amount of the purchases. Try higher payments to see how much you save. The result is an estimate and does not include annual fees or new purchases.

How to use

  1. Enter the current card balance.
  2. Set the annual interest rate (APR).
  3. Enter the monthly payment and see the payoff time.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it take so many months to clear the card?

Because a large part of the minimum payment goes to interest — only a small amount reduces the principal. Increase the monthly payment to clear it much faster.

How is credit card interest calculated?

Interest is calculated each month on the remaining balance: balance × (APR ÷ 12). The higher the balance, the more interest is paid.

How long does it take to pay off a credit card?

It depends on the balance, the rate and the monthly payment. Enter all three in the calculator and you will see the exact number of months; a higher payment shortens the time significantly.

Why is credit card interest so high?

Because the card is unsecured credit and the rate is usually higher than on other loans. Interest is calculated every month on the unpaid balance.

How do I avoid credit card interest?

Pay off the full balance within the interest-free period, if the card has one. Check the terms with your bank, because the grace period and rules vary.
