About this digital tool

The child height calculator predicts how tall a child may become when grown, from the father's and mother's height. Enter the height of both parents in cm, choose the child's gender and get the expected height with a possible range.

The tool uses the mid-parental height method: it adds the father's and mother's height, adds 13 cm for a boy or subtracts 13 cm for a girl, and divides by 2. The range is given as ±8 cm around the predicted value. It is a statistical estimate of growth and not an exact prediction, because nutrition, health and other genes also influence height. It suits curious parents and mild concerns about growth.

How to use

  1. Enter the father's height (cm)
  2. Enter the mother's height (cm)
  3. Choose the child's gender
  4. See the predicted height
  5. See the range (min–max) with 68% confidence

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the prediction?

The mid-parental height method has an accuracy of ±8-10 cm (1 standard deviation). That is, the child's real height will be within ±8 cm of the prediction in 68% of cases.

What factors influence height?

Genetics: ~80%. Nutrition (especially protein and calcium): ~10%. Sleep (growth hormone is secreted at night). Chronic illness. Physical activity.

When does growth stop?

Boys: usually 16–18 years (up to 21 possible). Girls: usually 14–16 years (up to 18 possible). Growth stops when the epiphyses (growth plates) close.

How accurate is the height prediction?

It is an average estimate and the child may fall inside or outside the ±8 cm range the tool shows. For real concerns about growth, talk to a paediatrician.

How is the expected height for a boy and a girl calculated?

For a boy: (father's height + mother's height + 13) ÷ 2. For a girl: (father's height + mother's height − 13) ÷ 2. The tool applies the formula according to the gender you choose.
