About this digital tool

The blood alcohol (BAC) calculator gives an indicative estimate of the blood alcohol percentage from the number of drinks, weight, gender and time elapsed. It assumes a standard drink contains about 14 g of alcohol and uses the Widmark formula, where the alcohol is divided by body weight and a distribution factor (0.68 for men, 0.55 for women), then about 0.015% is subtracted per hour.

This is an educational estimate only. The real result depends on food, metabolism, medication and many other factors, so it cannot be used to decide whether you are fit to drive. Never drive after drinking alcohol, even if the calculator shows a low value. For health concerns or alcohol dependence, talk to a doctor.

How to use

  1. Enter the number of drinks and the type of alcohol.
  2. Set your weight, gender and how many hours have passed.
  3. See the estimated BAC.

Frequently asked questions

How fast does the body eliminate alcohol?

About 0.015% BAC per hour (or ~7 g of alcohol/hour). For example, after 2 standard beers, it takes ~3–4 hours to return to 0%.

Can I use this calculator to know whether I can drive?

No. The estimate is indicative and can differ markedly from the real value. Don't drive after drinking alcohol; take a taxi or ask someone who hasn't been drinking.

How much alcohol is in a standard drink?

The calculator assumes about 14 g of pure alcohol per drink, e.g. a small beer, a glass of wine or a shot. Spirits or larger servings have more.

Why do women have a higher BAC with the same amount?

On average women have less body water and the alcohol is distributed in a smaller volume, so the Widmark factor is lower (0.55 versus 0.68). The result is a generalisation, not individual.
